A Nevada middle-school student opened fire on the campus of Sparks Middle School on Monday, killing a teacher and wounding two students. Officials said the student shooter died as well, but they said they had not fired any shots at him; it was unclear whether the shooter killed himself. The teacher who died was trying to protect other students, police said. The two injured students are expected to be OK. Read full article.

French officials demanded an explanation Monday from the United States after discovering the National Security Agency swept up 70.3 million French phone calls and recorded some of them in one 30-day period. France called the sweep “totally unacceptable,” but U.S. officials were unapologetic and said they needed to protect their own citizens. Secretary of State John Kerry is in France for an unrelated trip and promised to meet with concerned officials.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie dropped his lawsuit against same-sex marriage Monday, the same day the state started allowing gay marriages. Christie’s spokesman said the governor knew to give up the fight after he lost a challenge last week to delay the start of the marriages. Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who was just elected to U.S. Senate, wed several couples in a midnight ceremony. Read full article.

Greek police Monday released photographs of the Gypsy couple arrested last week and charged with abducting a girl who DNA tests show is not their biological child. The suspects, who were found along with the young blond girl last week when police raided a Gypsy camp, were identified as Christos Salis and a 40-year-old woman who went by multiple names, and both of them were taken into pre-trial custody. Authorities continue to search for the girl’s biological parents.
