Officials said Sunday the man charged with fatally shooting a Transportation Security Administration agent at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday told police at the scene that he acted alone and had been dropped off by a friend. Authorities do not believe the friend knew of Paul Ciancia’s plans, which also led to three other people being injured before police engaged Ciancia in a shootout and injured him. Ciancia remained in the hospital Sunday and was being sedated for medical reasons after being shot four times.
The New York City Marathon went off without incident Sunday after security was increased after the bombings at the Boston Marathon. Kenyan Geoffrey Mutail won the men’s title for a second year in a row, and Kenyan Priscah Jeptoo won the women’s title. The marathon returned after a one-year absence caused by last year’s Superstorm Sandy.
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford apologized Sunday for having been drunk in public, but he did not cave to mounting pressure to resign amid allegations of drug use. Police in Canada’s largest city said last week they obtained a video that appears to show the mayor doing crack cocaine. Ford said Sunday in an interview on a radio show that he has made mistakes but did not address the drug-use allegations because he said he had not seen the tape.
Egyptian authorities Sunday moved the trial of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, which is set to start Monday, to a new location within Cairo, a move aimed at thwarting support rallies planned by the Muslim Brotherhood. His supporters were outraged at the announcement changing the trial to the new venue, which is a well-fortified police academy. Morsi is on trial related to inciting violence in clashes last December that ultimately led to his removal.
