Our View: Staying safe on St. Paddy’s Day

Everyone wants to enjoy St. Patrick’s day, and this often includes going to get a green beer downtown or spending time with friends at a house party.

As you head out this weekend or Monday, remember the basics of staying safe. Go out with friends, not alone, pace yourself (and keep track of how much you drink) and be aware of your surroundings. Have a plan to get home before you go out and make sure your friends have plans too. Don’t ditch each other. Basically, just use your head and be smart.

These things seem simple, and we hear them a lot from different authorities, but they can’t be emphasized enough. These simple things can be the difference between a night to remember and a night you’d rather forget.

Bars and restaurants and downtown are prepared to handle the flock of students that is sure to go out despite the holiday being on a Monday, and so are both the city and campus police.

It is important to remember that they are there to help you if they are needed. If a friend is having trouble, call for help. Their first priority is safety. In addition, remember to listen if police are asking you to disperse or do something. Nothing good comes from arguing and refusing.

It is possible for students to enjoy this holiday without any trouble, and we hope that everyone does so. Go out, be smart, have a great time with your friends and live to tell the tale. You won’t regret it.
