Zac’s Flick Pick: ‘The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’
Often, students discover a plethora of oddities during their college years. We’re exposed to thrift shops, international cuisine, experimental music, possibly an assortment of alcohol and drugs and, of course, independent films. The one film that is absolutely essential for any college student who enjoys these types of oddities is “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.”
The film was one of Wes Anderson’s many genius visions with screenwriter Noah Baumbach. With music by Kent’s own Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo — including Portuguese acoustic David Bowie covers — and starring the incomparable Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum and Owen Wilson, this is unlike any other film. Steve Zissou is the flawed, visionary American version of Jacques Cousteau. His explorations, involving visual spectacles such as Zissou’s submarine and Claymation fish, are done how only Anderson can — blending reality and imagination.
The characters were very literary and the film confused critics and audiences, but the comedy gold and visual experience is unparalleled. The film is a cult classic that I think will one day transcend quirky cult status and be considered an under appreciated classic. Performances from Murray, Willem Dafoe and Cate Blanchett are overlooked. By the end of this film, you’ll be sporting blue sweatsuits and a Team Zissou insignia.
