Rec center celebrates 15th anniversary Saturday
The Student Recreation and Wellness Center will celebrate its 15-year anniversary Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The center opened in April 1999.
Recreational Services marketing coordinator Abby Millsaps said there will be different activities for each hour the building is open. She said everyone, whether they have a membership or not, is welcome to participate.
“We haven’t had a celebration like this in five years,” Millsaps said. “So we are really excited to open our doors.”
Millsaps said some of the events will include standup paddle board lessons, pickleball, cooking demonstrations, Outdoor Rental Center tours and demonstrations, trial climbs on the rock wall and a dive-in movie in the center’s pool. She said she thinks one of the popular events will be canoe battleship.
“In the lap pool, we remove all of the lanes, and you get in a canoe in the pool, and with buckets, you try to sink the other ship,” Millsaps said. “I hope a lot of students come out for that one.
Millsaps said she expects the dive-in movie to be popular among students as well.
“We set up a huge screen at the pool, and everyone gets in with inner tubes,” she said. “We turn out the lights, and you watch a movie in the pool. We are going to show Frozen.”
Millsaps said Recreational Services will be offering special offers and discounts during the event. Fitness and wellness programs for the summer will be 15 percent off.
