Army ROTC hosts 5K in honor of fallen soldier

The Army ROTC is hosting the WhiteHot 5K on Saturday at 8 a.m., in honor of fallen solider and Kent State graduate Ashley White.

“Ashley was commissioned in our program in December of 2009,” said Jennifer Abate, secretary for the Army ROTC and coordinator for the 5K. “She was active duty and deployed to Afghanistan in September of 2011 and was killed in October.”

Ashley was an incredible athlete, Abate said, so hosting a run in her name was the best way to honor her. All of the proceeds from the race will go toward a scholarship fund for a current senior in the Army ROTC program.

The run is open to the public, and participants should meet in front of Terrace Hall. Abate said the registration cutoff is 7:45 a.m. the morning of the race.

To register for the race online, go to https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/Kent/WhiteHot5K. Online registration closes Friday at 3 p.m.
