After weeks of fruitless searching for the missing Malaysian Airlines jet, sounds picked up by underwater equipment beckoned searchers to a remote stretch of the Indian Ocean on Sunday. Leaders of the multinational effort said it was unclear if the sounds were emitted from the jet’s two black boxes, which contain flight data and cockpit voice recordings. (Read full story.)
The Sunday presidential election in Afghanistan was praised as a success by Afghans and the international community. Millions braved a Taliban threat in order to cast their votes, although there were complaints about ballot shortages, fraud, and some sporadic violence. (Read full story.)
Several government buildings in eastern Ukraine were stormed by pro-demonstrators Sunday. The region, in which nearly half of the population is ethnically Russian, was a bastion of support for ousted president Viktor Yanukovych before he fled to Russia amid months of protests.
Former Olympian Oscar Pistorius will give testimony in South African court this week. Pistorius, who was the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics, faces 25 years to life in prison for the murder of Reeva Steekamp. Pistorius claims to have shot Steekamp on accident.
