Men’s golf team finishes eighth at Boilermaker Invitational to end regular season
The Flashes were greeted with warm weather at the Boilermaker Invitational, but the conditions were not enough to keep the team from falling into eighth place among the15 teams in the field.
Taylor Pendrith continued to perform well for the Flashes, marking an overall even-for-par finish for the tournament. Pendrith’s par finish came as a 2-under final round with two previous rounds of 1-over. The par score earned Pendrith ninth place on the leaderboard.
“Pendrith has been top-20 in almost every tournament, he’s been out of it once in 11 tournaments” coach Herb Page said. “So it’s not a surprise.”
Cory Conners finished just behind Pendrith for the Flashes’ scorecard, as he turned in a 4-over total for the tournament.
After being removed from the starting five just last week, sophomore Kody Fry golfed as a individual and matched Conners 4-over finish. That score tied Fry and Conners with four other golfers for 16th place.
“Obviously Kody, was taken out of the lineup, but he got back in and hopefully the does a lot for his confidence,” said Page. “We’re happy for Kody, he’s been up and down but it was a consistent week for him.”
Despite the individual performances, the overall eighth place team finish at Purdue isn’t to Page’s expectations.
“We aren’t pleased with eighth place,” Page added.” But golf is one of those things that changes week to week. We have not performed very well, but we’re okay; our expectations are higher.”
The team will have this coming weekend off before defending the Mid-American Conference Championship May 2-4.
“The break comes at a good time,” said Page. “It’s good that we are home this week and can work on our game. We need to have some fun and just play some golf.”
After the week off, the Flashes will head back to Indiana where the MAC teams will compete at Prairie View Golf Club.
“We have to iron out some wrinkles, find some weaknesses,” Page added. “We have to play better and play sharper in the MAC Championship.”
