Women’s golf head to Minneapolis for season opener

The Kent State women’s golf team will head to Minneapolis on Monday to open the season at the same event they won a year ago.

The Flashes will play on the Par-72 course at the Minikahda Club. The first two rounds will take place Monday, and the final round will be played Tuesday to wrap up the event.

Last year’s Mid-American-Conference Women’s Golfer of the Year Jennifer Ha will lead the Flashes at the Minnesota Invitational. Also competing in the event will be Taylor Kim, Raksha Phadke and Wad Phaewchimplee.

They will take the course against host Minnesota, Nebraska, GRU-Augusta, Cal State Fullerton, Illinois, Texas State, Colorado, Texas, SMU, East Carolina, Purdue, Fresno State and Kansas.

The Flashes will attempt to maintain their control of and continue their dominance in the Mid-American Conference this season just as they have done every season. In the 16 years of the conference’s history, Kent State has won the MAC tournament every year.

Second-year head coach Greg Robertson will guide this year’s 2014-2015 team. Last season, Kent State barely missed its fifth NCAA championship appearance.

Ha won the MAC Championship last season, and her teammates, Natalie Goodson and Wad Phaewchimplee finished the tournament second and third, respectively.

In the 2012-2013 season, Ha became just the second woman in Kent State program history to qualify as an individual at the NCAA Championships. In the following season, Phaewchimplee became the third to do so as a freshman.

The Flashes will be paired with Minnesota and SMU in the opening round and will tee off at 8:22 a.m.
