Men’s golf takes to Toledo for Inverness Intercollegiate tournament
The Kent State men’s golf team will travel to Toledo, Ohio, on Monday to compete in the 10th annual Inverness Intercollegiate tournament.
The Flashes will compete against tournament host the University of Toledo, Alabama-Birmingham, Austin Peay, Charlotte, East Tennessee State, Liberty, Memphis, Mercer, Michigan State, South Florida and Yale.
Kent State started the 2014-2015 season with a rocky start in the Minnesota Invitational, placing 7th out 15 teams. The men finished 43-over-par and struggled down the stretch.
“I just don’t want us to beat ourselves, “ head coach Herb Page said. “I just want more consistency right across the line up — compete against yourself and compete against the golf course.”
The Flashes, a relatively young team, will feature three freshmen in the lineup on Monday: Ian Holt, Chase Johnson and J.D Hughes. Juniors Sebastian Bendsen and Kody Fry will also compete.
Bendsen was a bright spot for the team in Minnesota a couple of weeks ago. He placed in the top 15 and shot 7-over-par. Holt started out strong in his first tournament as well, shooting 19-over-par and finishing in 19th place.
“I hope we have a little more consistency more than anything through three rounds of golf, “ Page said. “I don’t expect really low scores because it is a very difficult golf course.”
The Inverness golf course has been host to four U.S. Opens, two U.S. Senior Opens, two PGA Championships, one U.S. Amateur and the 2009 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship.
The two-day tournament will begin place Monday at 8:30 a.m., with the first two rounds. The third and final round of the tournament will be played Tuesday.
