Men’s golf travels to Columbus for Jack Nicklaus Invitational
The Kent State men’s golf team is set to play Sunday at Ohio State University’s Scarlett golf course.
The Jack Nicklaus Invitational, a two-day tournament at the par-71, 7,455-yard Ohio State University Golf Club.
The Flashes will play their third tournament of the season, following a sixth-place finish at the Gofer invitational in Minnesota and a seventh-place finish at the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo.
The team hasn’t played to their potential in the first two tournaments or to the standard Kent State has set under head coach Herb Page’s tenure.
Page calls for the team to have more consistency out of the entire group of golfers.
“We got two or three players playing pretty decent,” Page said. “We just need to get more consistent play out of the back end of the lineup. My expectations are we can do good if we can put it together, but we haven’t been able to do that yet.”
The Flashes have had three or more freshmen in the lineup this season, but Page noted that he needs his few upperclassman to play better.
Junior Sebastian Bendsen has been one key older player in the Flashes’ lineup this season. He finished in seventh place in last week’s tournament in Toledo and he expects the team give this weekend’s tournament its best shot.
“I expect us to just go out there and play,” Bendsen said. “We are just going to go out there and be satisfied with some good pars and make some good decisions because it is a tough golf course.”
Bendsen said he’s optimistic that his team has a chance to get better as the season progresses. He said everyone will continue to work hard and help each other as much as they can.
“We just got to keep working and find our own game and help the new guys,” Bendsen said. “We believe we are going to get there.”
The Flashes will take to the course with freshmen Chase Johnson, Ian Holt and Spencer Dobbs, along with junior Sebastian Bendsen, junior Cody Fry and senior Taylor Zoeller, at 8:45 a.m. Sunday.
