Flashes field hockey relying on seniors in home stretch of season

Freshman Ines Delpech jumps over Ohio University’s Vicky Nase’s stick while taking the ball down the field during the game Saturday, October 11, 2014. The Flashes won, 4-3.

As the regular season winds down for the Kent State field hockey team, coach Kathleen Wiler knows how important her seniors are to the team’s success.

“I rely on my seniors to set the tone, to keep the mood and energy high and to continue playing hard everyday,” Wiler said.

One of those seniors who helped set the tone is Missy Ramsey.

Ramsey understands what it takes to get through a long season and how to prepare each day.

“It’s really important to take our lessons we learned throughout the year and know we can work through anything and keep our composure throughout a game,” Ramsey said.

The Flashes (5-8, 2-0 MAC) will head to Miami, Ohio, Saturday to battle the Redhawks (4-10, 2-1 MAC) at noon. The Flashes will look to keep the momentum they have built going into conference play.

“We are very confident coming off of the wins we’ve had and have practiced very hard all week,” Ramsey said.

Wiler said she knows how crucial these last few weeks have been and the approach her team should take to the end.

“We’re trying to really slow it down and take it a game at a time,” Wiler said. “We only have one thing to focus on this weekend in Miami, which is getting a result.”

The Flashes will also rely heavily on sophomore goalie Andrea Rinehart as they finish out conference play over the course of these next few weeks. Rinehart has found her stride over the past four games, posting two shutouts during the stretch.

“I’ve learned throughout the year that we are all in this together and that my teammates always have my back,” Rinehart said.

The Flashes will look for their third straight conference win as they head to Miami.
