University offers free depression screenings on Oct. 9

Kent State University psychologists and health volunteers will screen people for depression and other mental health issues Thursday, Oct. 9 for National Depression Screening Day.

The University Health Services and Psychological Services will host the screening from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the second floor of the Student Center.

The depression screening will determine if a person has a mental health issue such as depression, general anxiety, bipolar disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder.

“It is a screening, so you can do a rating form and find where you rate in terms of symptoms,” said John Schell, senior psychologist with University Health Services and co-coordinator of the event.

Participants will fill out a questionnaire to determine their ratings. Once the questionnaire is scored, they meet with a clinician to discuss the results. Referrals to counseling or other services can be made if needed.

The event also offers additional information about mental health and health services, such as counseling services and other psychological testing available on campus.

The event is free and open to anyone in the Kent community, including students, faculty, staff and residents of Kent.
