The School of Dance and Theatre showcases orginality with its upcoming faculty dance concert “Dance ‘14: In Flow.”

The event, running from Nov. 21 to 23 in the E. Turner Stump Theatre, will feature performances by student dancers that are choreographed by faculty members and a guest artist.

“Our concert teaches specific skills to our students that are essential to them if they want to become performers or teachers,” Andrea Shearer, director of “Dance ’14: In Flow” and Kent State professor of dance, said. “It’s as if we’re rehearsing a play, but it’s even more challenging because we’re writing it too.”

Of the six pieces to be performed this weekend, one will be choreographed by Tony-winning choreographer Garth Fagan.

“You’ll know him for his work with ‘The Lion King,’” Shearer said. “We got in touch with his dance troupe and sent them a video of our dancers, so they could see their caliber. Then Garth came down to work with our students.”

“Dance ‘14: In Flow” will begin at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. The event is free for students.
