The Kent State women’s golf team started sluggish in the Jim West Challenge in Boerne, Texas, shooting 22-over-par and tying for seventh place.

The Flashes couldn’t seem to get it going all afternoon. One of the biggest reasons for their struggles was their inability to convert on the Par 5s. They struggled on the Par 5s, tying for last place at 5-over-par.

“The one thing that we did today that we haven’t done the last couple of tournaments was a lot of double and triple bogeys,” Kent State coach Greg Robertson said. “It really hurt us. For the most part, everybody hit the ball pretty well. I think what got us a little bit was around the greens.”

Junior Taylor Kim was the only player to finish her day under par. Kim shot 1-under-par and leads Texas A&M’s Maddie Szeryk by one stroke.

Sophomore Wad Phaewchimplee shot 4-over–par to tie for 18th place. Senior Jennifer Ha tied for 50th place and was 9-over-par on the day. Sophomore Raksha Phadke tied for 53rd place at 10-over-par. Senior Natalie Goodson finished with a score of 13-over-par, tying for 65rd place.

Playing as an individual, sophomore Maddy Mullins finished in 12th place at 3-over-par.

The Jim West Challenge was expected to be a three-day tournament, but dude to inclement weather, the tournament must be completed Monday. Tee times will begin the second round at 8 a.m.
