Opinion: Don’t bash veterans
Since most of us were born in the early to late 1990s, I’m sure we all have heard about Michael Moore. Moore is probably one of the most controversial documentarians in America.
Two of his more well known works would be “Bowling For Columbine,” which is about the shooting at Columbine High School, and “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which is about the Sept. 11 tragedy. Moore has definitely made a name for himself in America.
However, lately the armed forces are probably not fans of Moore.
After “American Sniper” won the box office weekend, Moore took to Twitter with his opinions about snipers
“My uncle killed by sniper in WW2. We were taught snipers were cowards. Will shoot u in the back. Snipers aren’t heroes. And invaders r worse” -@MMFlint
“But if you’re on the roof of your home defending it from invaders who’ve come 7k miles, you are not a sniper, u are brave, u are a neighbor.” -@MMFlint
Moore later explained in a Facebook post that a Japanese sniper killed his uncle 70 years ago.
Well, Moore has always been an advocate for stricter gun control and such in the country. That’s fine. Everyone is free to have his or her opinion. Although Moore can think snipers are cowards, do not tweet about a movie, which by the way is about a Navy SEAL who was a hero for our country.
On another note, “American Sniper” is based off of one of the country’s most lethal snipers, Chris Kyle. Kyle went on four tours of duty and came back to America alive. Not many people do that, and not many veterans can come back and readjust to their normal lives.
Do you think Moore has had any experience of what it’s like being a sniper? I’m going to answer that for you. No, he has not.
I totally understand why people feel that these tweets were totally disrespectful to “American Sniper” and Chris Kyle.
Personally, it’s pretty disrespectful to say that about our armed forces, especially when they volunteer to serve our country. Moore has no idea what it’s like to go through the rigorous training to be deployed. Snipers put their lives on the line just like anyone else that goes into battle.
When you’re a famous figure in the public eye, you cannot post your opinion on a public network like Twitter. Moore has 1.8 million followers. He was bound to receive backlash for this stunt.
Not a good move on Moore’s part. I can only imagine what controversial stunt he will pull next.
