Gordon, Tayala awarded MAC athletes of the week
Kent State junior Wayne Gordon and senior Matthias Tayala have been named the Men’s Mid-American Conference Track and Field players of the week.
Gordon, who participates in short sprints and relays, won the 60-meter and 200-meter dash events during the Akron/Kent duals, which took place on Jan. 16 in Akron.
Gordon won the 60-meter dash in 6.69 seconds, while taking home the 200-meter dash crown in 20.95 seconds.
Gordon’s time in the 60-meter dash was good enough to place him third on the team’s All-Time Top Performers List behind 2000 grad Bobby Cruse in first and 2007 grad Marc Johnson in second.
Tayala also won the award for his contributions during the duals by winning the men’s weight throw with a mark of 21.36 meters.
He finished fourth in shot put as well, putting up a mark of 16.01 meters.
Gordon and Tayala will look to continue their strong start to the season as they travel to the Gladstein Invitational at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana this Friday.
