Students volunteers reach peak to participate in MLK Day of Service

For most students, Monday is a day to relax and not  go to class, but for a small group of students, Monday means a day to give back.

Hillel at Kent State, the Office of Experiential Education and Civic Engagement; and the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are hosting the MLK Day of Service to give students the chance to give back to a variety of services, including Kent State’s  Miller Community Home and the United Way of Portage County.

“We are full, at our maximum of 179 volunteers,” said Shiri Akrish, the engagement associate at Hillel.

Sign-ups had to be closed because Hillel reached the maximum number of volunteers for the Day of Service.

With 14 different locations to volunteer at, “projects range from working with the elderly to preparing meals to crafting projects,” Akrish said.

When asked to describe what MLK day means to her, Akrish said the first word that comes to mind is “hope.”

“It is a day to give back,” Akrish said. “I am impressed by how many people are volunteering.”

The organizers of this Day of Service hope to promote Monday as a day “on” instead of a day off.
