“Hello?  Hurry… please, hurry… My ex, he came over. He… he broke in and he was beating me, and I shot him,” said Kent Police officer Sarah Berkey in a 911 call early Thursday morning.

Burkey is currently on paid administrative leave after she shot and killed her ex-boyfriend, Adam Jovicic,  in her Munroe Falls home. Officers at the scene said they heard two shots fired as they approached the driveway, minutes after Berkey made the call. Jovicic died at Akron City Hospital around 5 a.m. on Thursday.

Gary Geunther, Summit county medical examiner, said Jovicic died from two gunshot wounds to the abdomen.

Jovicic was married and worked as a Summit County juvenile detention officer before he died.  Officers suspect he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Jovicic also had a history of violence. In 2013, police charged Jovicic with domestic violence in Cuyahoga Falls. However those charges were changed to disorderly conduct.  He was ordered to stay away from the victim.

Lt. Jim Prusha of the Kent City Police Department said Berkey, a school resource officer at Kent Roosevelt High School, is well liked at the department. Kent City School District Superintendent George Joseph said he hopes Berkey will be able to return to work soon.

“She works really well with our guidance counselors and our administration and is an exemplar employee,” Joseph said.
