Men’s track dominant at Tennessee Relays over the weekend
Men’s track had a record-breaking outing over the weekend when they participated in the Tennessee Relays in Knoxville, Tennessee.
On Thursday, two hurdlers received first place finishes: senior Miles Dunlap and junior William Barnes. Dunlap ran the 400-meter hurdles and finished with a time of 52.72 seconds, while Barnes ran in the 110-meter hurdles and finished with a time of 13.80 seconds.
The team’s success on the track wouldn’t stop there. Sophomore Matthew Tobin set a career-best in the 400-meters dash, when he finished with a time of 46.83 seconds. Tobin’s record-breaking time was good for third place in the race and also placed him third all-time in Kent State history for that event.
In the field portion, sophomore David Paliscak and junior Kyle Schlumbohm both finished in the top five of their respective events. Paliscak finished fourth in the discus competition and led the team with a mark of 49.46 meters. Schlumbohm wrapped up the pole vault competition in third by jumping at a final height of 4.86 meters.
When the relays resumed on Saturday, the Flashes continued to set new records.
The 4×400 meter relay team of Tobin, Dunlap, junior Danny Young and sophomore Andrew O’Leary broke Kent State’s record with a time of 3:08.88 seconds and secured them a first place finish.
The previous record was set in 2014, with a time of 3:08.97 seconds.
The 4×100 meter relay team, which consists of Dunlap, Barnes, freshman Jonathan Grant and junior Wayne Gordon, finished their race with a time of 40.49 seconds. The time gave the team a third-place finish as they finished with the seventh-fastest time in Kent State history.
The Flashes will be back in competition again next week when they travel to compete in the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Alabama, and the Cardinal Invitational in Muncie, Indiana on Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18.
