Best Place to Cure a Hangover: Mike’s Place
Mike’s PlaceYour head is pounding, and your stomach is grumbling. Naturally, you head to Mike’s Place. Stepping inside Mike’s sanctuary, there is everything from a sandy pirate ship stationed near the entrance to Kent State memorabilia covering the walls. It is the perfect place to cure a hangover. A “traditional Kent State student’s cure for the common hangover,” according to the menu, Owner Mike Kostensky recommends the “Pat O’Brian” omelet, stuffed with gyro, hash browns, sautéed onions and peppers and served with toast. The first place victory, however, is no surprise to Kostensky. With the large portions and 40-some breakfast options, Kostensky said, “we get a lot of hungover kids here.” However, Mike’s Place might not be the best place to show up in last night’s puke-covered clothes, looking for solitude and relief. A popular spot for students, Mike’s Place is far from quiet and always bustling with locals, tourists and students alike. |

Wild Goats Cafe, Pulp Juice and Smoothie BarIf Mike’s Place’s massive menu makes your head spin, Wild Goats Café and Pulp Juice and Smoothie Bar should surely cure your hangover woes. Wild Goats’ cozy diner serves breakfast all day, along with burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches. “I don’t know if the hangovers have much to do with it or not, but being a breakfast restaurant, it’s kind of our innate thing to have busy weekend mornings,” Wild Goats’ General Manager Gary Allard said. “I know Thursday is bar night, and we certainly have busy Friday mornings, so I’m sure that has some effect on it.” For someone hungover, Allard said he recommends “The scrambler — sausage gravy, eggs, hash browns, your choice of meat or vegetable clumped into one big thing with some toast to help soak up what you need.” At Pulp, you can ride the struggle bus all the way through the drive-thru for a hangover cure. Its “Hangover Relief” smoothie is the perfect remedy for banishing your headache and replenishing your energy. |

Chipotle, Five GuysIf you’re looking for something a little greasier to soak up last night’s alcohol, Chipotle or Five Guys Burgers and Fries are the way to go. At Chipotle, hungover students favor the combination of tortilla, rice and beans. “The rice absorbs your alcohol, so it’s like you never even went out the night before,” said Adrienne Nelson, a sophomore special education major. The only downside, she said, is waiting until 11 a.m. for Chipotle open. A little way down on Main Street, Five Guys’ greasy French fries and juicy hamburgers are a college student’s hangover medicine. “Five Guys has the thickest burgers,” said Nicole Cranford, a freshman fashion merchandising major. “They are perfect for soaking up alcohol and curing last night’s hangover.” |
