University’s annual prairie burn clears way for summer growth
The Kent State Fire Department set the grass behind the Student Recreation and Wellness Center ablaze Tuesday for the university’s annual grounds maintenance.

The annual controlled burn, which lasted for about 40 minutes, clears away dead leaves and stems for the grass to grow during the summer, said university spokeswoman Emily Vincent in an email Tuesday.
