University’s annual prairie burn clears way for summer growth

A controlled fire, started by the Kent Fire Department, rages on as firefighters keep watch on Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Every year the prairie grass behind the Student Wellness and Recreation Center is set on fire to keep the growth under control.

The Kent State Fire Department set the grass behind the Student Recreation and Wellness Center ablaze Tuesday for the university’s annual grounds maintenance.

The annual controlled burn, which lasted for about 40 minutes, clears away dead leaves and stems for the grass to grow during the summer, said university spokeswoman Emily Vincent in an email Tuesday.
