Balcony repairs began at Kent State Student Center

Workers began masonry repairs on the third-floor balcony of the Student Center overlooking Risman Plaza last week after the brick parapet wall was deemed unsafe.

“The wall was not built properly to begin with,” said Beth Ruffing, assistant director of Capital Design and Construction in the Office of the University Architect at Kent State. “It was leaning in toward the balcony, and it would eventually fall over, so we are taking care of the problem.”

Ruffing said the Student Center’s maintenance fund will be funding the repairs.

Repairs will be finished in mid-August, Ruffing said.

Fences have been set up in Risman Plaza, but the area is still accessible via pedestrian walkways.
