Kent State’s residence services will be hosting a two-week energy conservation competition, “Do it in the Dark 2015,” from Nov. 1 to Nov. 14.

This two-week competition will take place in all residence halls on campus. The hall that can reduce the most energy, which will be measured from a previously recorded baseline, wins.

According to Kent State’s residence services website, there are many ways students can save energy: turn off the lights when the room, unplug cell phone chargers or laptop chargers when not in use, shut down computer or video game console when not in use, open and shut their refrigerator door quickly, wash and dry only full loads of laundry and clean the lint trap on dryers.

Do it in the Dark 2015 can be beneficiary to both the university and students.

“Residence services takes this very seriously,” Jill Church, director of residence services, said. “One of our priorities is to educate students on energy consumption. We want [them] to be aware.”
