Museum Origins course takes students to explore roots in UK

Registration is now open for “Museum Origins.” The course, offered by Kent State’s School of Library and Information Science, is a 10-week program that will study the evolution of the modern museum.

“Once upon a time, there were all of these private collections,” said Flo Cunningham, communications marketing and public relations specialist for SLIS. “Once they started being opened and offered for people to see them, it sort of started evolving into museums as we all know them today.”

“Museum Origins” will trace that evolution back to its roots in Europe. Participating students will go to numerous institutions in the UK during Kent State’s spring break and extend a few days beyond.

The class will have the opportunity to visit museums in London and Oxford with outings to see historical sites and private collections.

The course is open to graduate and upper-division undergraduate students of any major. The application deadline is Nov. 1.
