College Town Kent, Alpha Xi Delta host fashion show for Autism Speaks

A model in Gracy Lane attire struts the runway at the For the Love of Fashion 2017 fashion show Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 in the Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center. All proceeds from the event benefited the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation’s support for Autism Speaks.

The lights dimmed, the music pulsated and the crowd went silent as models conquered the stage at the 2017 “For the Love of Fashion” fashion show on Friday night.

One by one, the models displayed the trending outfits of College Town Kent. Dina Younis, a fashion blogger for Dina’s Days, was asked to emcee the fashion show, which benefited Kent State Alpha Xi Delta’s philanthropy, Autism Speaks.

Alpha Xi Delta won a social media contest between several of Kent’s sororities; the prize was hosting the show for College Town Kent, with proceeds going to the winning sorority’s philanthropy.

“Since 2009, our sorority has supported Autism Speaks,” said Alpha Xi Delta sister Elizabeth Coccia. “Participating in events for our philanthropy is very important to my sisters and I – it holds a special place in our hearts.”

College Town Kent is a plaza comprised of boutiques, restaurants and other services in downtown Kent. The fashion show was meant to put a spotlight on these stores, while bringing the community together in support of autism.

Gracylane, UniversiTEES, One Love Yoga & Boutique, Rush By Dino Palmieri Salon & Spa and Carnaby Street Style were featured on the models and items were available for purchase after the event.

“I saw an ad about the fashion show in a Kent fashion magazine – I couldn’t wait to go,” said Sarah Cypcar, Hudson High School student, after watching the show with her friends.

Dave’s Cosmic Subs, Fresco Mexican Grill & Salsa Bar, Insomnia Cookies, Newdle Bar, Panini’s Bar & Grill, PizzaFire and Peace, Love and Little Donuts served appetizers to hungry guests awaiting the start of the show.

“This was the best show to date and all the models did a fabulous job,” said Debra Sherman, marketing director for College Town Kent. “I am excited to see the upcoming trends and styles of 2017.”
