Baseball wins one, drops three over weekend
Kent State won one game and lost three in a short series hosted by Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Kent State (7-4) won 9-1 against Radford University (2-9) on Friday.
Sophomore Connor Wollersheim jumpstarted the Flashes on the mound by surrendering two hits and one earned run in five innings to get the win. Junior catcher Tim DalPorto provided the offense with two RBI and a double while sophomore shortstop Josh Hollander contributed with a triple, a stolen base and an RBI.
The Flashes weren’t able to build off the momentum, however, as they were swept by Wake Forest (9-4) on Saturday by scores of 7-2 and 5-0. The Demon Deacons roughed up Kent State junior starter Eli Kraus (2-1) in the first game as he gave up four runs (three earned) in five innings in the loss. Seniors Reilly Hawkins (LF) and Mason Mamarella (CF) were the only Flashes to drive in runs during the week.
The second game was just as much of a struggle for a Flashes starter as Zach Willeman (2-1) surrendered five runs in five innings in the loss. The Kent State’s offense didn’t help Willeman’s cause, only managing three hits.
Kent State faced off against Quinnipiac University (5-5) on Sunday, with the Flashes eventually falling by a final score of 4-2.
The Flashes fought back to tie it at two in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from RF Luke Burch, but the Bobcats took the lead right back in the top of the sixth on a two run home-run by Julius Saporito.
Kent State will travel to face the College of Charleston in a three-game series this coming weekend.
