The Kent State University men’s golf team pushed ahead of several top teams in its tournament this past weekend. 

The team played in the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, North Carolina.

No.14 Kent State placed second, ten strokes behind No. 15 Wake Forest. The Flashes placed ahead of No. 9 Louisiana State and No. 3 Virginia.

“We beat two teams in the top ten,” coach Herb Page said. “It was a very good week for our team.”

The Flashes were led by Ian Holt, who placed second overall. Holt ended the tournament one stroke behind the top spot. Kent golfer Gisli Sveinbergsson tied for ninth place, and the other golfers placed in the top 30 in a field of 84 golfers.

“In a deep field of players like this it takes a team effort,” Page said. “Every member of the team is averaging under par. They’re playing well and continuing to play well.”

The weather conditions were not ideal for the golfers on Saturday.

“I was out there for ten minutes and my hands were frozen,” Gisli Sveinbergsson said.

The weather became untenable for the final round of the tournament.

“It was disappointing, but the weather really turned ugly,” Page said. “It was sleeting – not what we came to Myrtle Beach for.”
