Phi Beta Sigma to host Stroll-Off
Phi Beta Sigma Inc. will host its first Greek Stroll-Off Saturday, March 18, in the Kent State Student Center Ballroom.
Phi Beta Sigma Secretary Franklin Chesney said the show will start at 7:14 p.m. — a time that’s significant because the organization was founded in 1914.
“This will be a stroll-off, which is a form of dancing within the Divine Nine,” Chesney said.
Organizations participating include some of the Divine Nine — historically black Greek organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council — like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Phi Beta Sigma.
There will be some overlap between this event and last semester’s stepshow.
“It will be similar because members will have on uniforms and [be] performing,” Chesney said. “It will be different because they are given a theme and have to come up with a performance.”
The event will be hosted by Phi Beta Sigma member Stepha’n Henshaw and broadcast journalism major Savanna McCarthy.
“There will be three rounds with different themes, first round is chapter’s choice, second is slow and sexy and the third is old school,” Chesney said. “Winners will also win a grand prize of $500.”
The chapter’s choice round gives members a chance to show their creativity by letting them pick what they want. The slow and sexy round will have seductive movement and the old school round will have a throwback vibe.
The performances will be judged by four judges from Kappa Alpha Psi, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Phi Beta Sigma themselves.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are available online for $10 and $15 at the door.
