The Kent State University Airport will remain closed Tuesday after a water main broke on state Route 59.

Airport operations coordinator Thomas Friend said the broken main was shut off, leaving the facility without water. The Kent campus is unaffected by the leak.

The university announced the break on Twitter Tuesday morning, telling students with morning classes at the airport not to show up. They later announced the airport would be closed all day.

Kent State News:

“(There are) no classes or anything here because we have no water,” Friend said. “But it doesn’t affect the airport itself as far as flying in or anything like that.”

Water mains are underground pipes that transport water from the source to local streets. When a main breaks, water often shoots from underground into the street. According to Networx Systems, most water mains break because of corrosion, and the city is usually responsible for repairing them.

Friend said he expects the leak to be fixed by the end of the day Tuesday.
