Flashes win four events on Akron Invitational final day
Kent State track and field won four events in the last session of the Akron Invitational Saturday at the Stile Field House.
“This is just another preparation meet to get ready for the bigger meets,” coach Mike Schober said after practice Thursday.
Riak Reese won both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 6.70 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 21.02 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Reese ranks fourth in program history in each event.
“Riak did have a pretty good day; we were hoping for more,” Schober said.
Schober said Reese ran a “little bit” off his personal record in the 60-meter dash Saturday; Reese’s personal record is 6.58 seconds, and he ran the race in 6.70 in Akron.
Nicole Yeargin also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.27 seconds, exceeding her personal record of 24.37 seconds. Yeargin’s time is now ranked fourth in program history.
Grzegorz Kunc won the 800-meter run and also set a personal best with a time of one minute and 52.51 seconds.
Tyler Williams placed second in the 400-meter run with a time of 55.53 seconds in the gold division.
Lauren Burnett finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of two minutes and 14 seconds.
Mi’Angel Daniels placed third in the 60-meter hurdles. Daniels’ time of 8.53 seconds now ranks fourth on Kent State’s all-time list.
“It was a good meet — probably the fastest meet we’ve had this year,” junior sprinter Brandon Harris said. “There were NCAA qualifying marks met, lifetime (personal records) and good competition all day.”
Maddie Dunlap finished first in the 3,000-meter run in the blue division with a time of 10 minutes and 27.76 seconds. Jaimie Adams finished closely behind in second with a time of 10 minutes and 30.84 seconds.
Kevin Jones finished second in the 800-meter run of the blue division with a time of one minute and 55.66 seconds.
Sarena Choi placed second in the triple jump with a length of 18 feet, 1.00 inch.
Reese saw the meet as a positive step for both the men’s and women’s teams.
“As a team, we had some really good performances, and I feel like people were able to gain confidence to build upon going into the last two meets before conference,” Reese said. “It always feels good to see my teammates do good, and I’m excited to see everyone’s hard work continue to pay off.”
