Throughout October, Scribbles Coffee Company will have a special drink, the Her Latte, in collaboration with Kent State’s Her Campus chapter to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
15% of proceeds from the latte will go toward the foundation. The drink features flavors of white chocolate and raspberry, with pink cold foam and sprinkles to top it off.
Her Campus is a national online magazine with several chapters for colleges around the country, including Kent. The organization is run by women and advocates for women who produce articles, events and social media content.
Ella Holzhei, Her Campus’ marking coordinator and a junior fashion merchandising major, joined Her Campus last year. She said she wanted to do a Her Campus drink inspired by Sabrina Carpenter’s two Dunkin’ collaborations because having a latte and a drink deal is very “hot” right now.
“I wanted to play on that, but also cater it towards us and our audience,” Holzhei said.
She came up with the idea last semester, but it didn’t come to fruition until this semester when she took over as the marketing director.
Another member of Her Campus, Hannah Planey, a senior journalism major, works at Scribbles and was able to get the organization connected with the café.
The decision to feature the drink during October was on purpose, as it is Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Bailey Fair, president of Her Campus and a senior digital media productions major, has been involved with the organization for the entirety of her time at the university. She said that breast cancer awareness is important to Her Campus as a whole, but it’s especially important to her because her mom has survived breast cancer twice.
“Every October we’ve done some sort of small thing for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this has been our biggest outreach yet,” Fair said.
Her Campus has never done anything quite like this where the whole community is able to get involved, but they do partake in community events to give back, as well as philanthropy.
Each Her Latte comes with a unique drink sleeve designed by members of Her Campus at one of their meetings. Holzhei said she got the idea to feature the specialized drink sleeves from her hometown coffee shop that used drink sleeves designed by children.
“It just stuck with me because [drink sleeves are] something that you normally just toss out and don’t really think of. But, you can also make them stand for something, or make you do a double-take,” Holzhei said.
She said that because a lot of women aren’t taken seriously within the medical field, it’s more crucial than ever to fund research.
“It’s such a tough topic to fully understand, so I think funding is important, especially, because we don’t have the Women’s Center on Kent State’s campus anymore. So, to fund those resources that support women and women’s health is so important,” she said.
Fair said breast cancer awareness is essential now, especially for college students.
“We don’t want women’s healthcare to go under the radar ever. Breast cancer is also found younger and younger as the years go on,” she said. “It’s really important for women to start doing their self-exams now.”
Fair also brought up Her Campus being an advocate for women’s issues and wanting to help the community.
“We are really focused on women’s protections and women’s rights and women’s healthcare,” she said. “Especially after the Women’s Center closed, we want to make as much of an impact in the Kent community as possible.”
