A two-month joint investigation between local and federal authorities has led to dozens of arrests and more than 50 firearms seized in Akron.
“Operation Double Eagle” was carried out by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Akron Police, Barberton Police and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said the goal was to reduce gun violence and drug trafficking by targeting violent crime hot spots across the city.
Lieutenant Michael Murphy of the Akron Police Department said officers confiscated 52 firearms, including pistols, rifles, a shotgun, suppressors and even a machine gun.
“To be able to get all of that off of our streets is amazing for us,” Murphy said.
The operation included raids over two days last week and resulted in 37 federal and 12 state defendants facing charges.
Prosecutors said the charges range from drug trafficking to illegal firearm possession, as well as straw purchases, where guns are bought and then resold illegally.
Murphy added that partnerships with federal agencies were essential to the success of the operation.
“This was really just an extension of that collaboration in a bigger way, to make a significant impact on gun violence and drug trafficking in our city,” Murphy said.
Officials emphasized that while arrests and seizures are critical, the broader goal is to increase safety and deter future crime in Akron neighborhoods.
