In an Instagram post on Sept. 18, Undergraduate Student Government President, Ivory Kendrick, addressed students’ concerns about student organizations’ funding and the sunsetting of majors and minors after the implementation of Senate Bill 1.
Professor and interim associate Provost for Academic Affairs, Scott Sherdian, briefed USG’s general assembly about the effects of SB1 during their meeting on Sept. 17.
From this, SB1 will not affect the existence of student organizations and identity student organizations on campus, Kendrick said in the post.
However, the funding these organizations receive from the university or academic departments may be affected. Kendrick did not explain exactly how, but reminded students that USG allocations will remain open to all registered organizations.
For concerns about the sunsetting of majors, Kendricks said no majors “involving topics and theories about identity,” like Africana Studies, will be sunset.
These majors will only be sunset if their enrollment decreases, but students in those programs will still be able to finish their degree.
Following the implementation of the bill, Kendrick said USG remains committed to “listening, advocating and helping” students.
“Although many changes are happening on Kent State’s campus, in Ohio, and in our country, nothing will change the community and care we share for one another as a campus and a culture,” he said. “Change is what causes us to grow and develop, whether it’s good or bad.”
