As the Kent State University Museum marks its 40th anniversary, Director Sarah Spinner Liska is also celebrating her first year with the role, a year that was filled with new ideas, student engagement and special events.
“I’m thrilled to be here and really excited about all the successes that the museum and its team have achieved over the last year and to celebrate everything the museum has achieved over the last 40 years,” Spinner Liska said.
Spinner Liska, a Canadian native with a background in art history, law and museum work across Northeast Ohio, took on this role in July 2024. Since then, she has worked with student organizations and hosted events ranging from fashion shows to magazine launches.
This summer, the opening of “Sparkle” took place, which displayed jewelry and wardrobe pieces worn by Aileen Mehle, a society columnist. This event drew in over 200 attendees and got media attention from Cleveland.com and New Day Cleveland.
Another highlight for Spinner Liska was showcasing adaptive fashion by alumna Tracy Vollbrecht.
Spinner Liska said there is more excitement to come in the future, such as Akron-born Wicked costume designer, Paul Tazewell, to visit in September as part of the Thomas Schroth Visiting Artist Series.
“This is your museum,” Spinner Liska said. “With your Kent State ID, students get in free. We’re open six days a week.”
