The National Weather Service issued an air quality advisory for Portage and other Northeast Ohio counties following smoke from Canadian wildfires passing over midwestern states on June 3.
The advisory included no mention of the Canadian wildfires, but will remain in effect until midnight June 4.
On June 3, 203 active wildfires were reported across Canada in parts like British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. These wildfires are a result of dry conditions from a lack of precipitation.
In a New York Times article, Marc Chenard, a meteorologist at the Weather Prediction Center, said satellite images revealed a large amount of smoke covering eastern states on June 4.
During an advisory, children, elderly individuals and those with breathing difficulties should monitor their time outside and check air quality readings, according to the National Weather Service.
To reduce air pollution, the National Weather Service recommends the following:
- Drive less and use other transportation like biking and walking.
- Don’t leave your car running, instead turn it off.
- Refill your gas tank after sunset.
- Wait to mow your lawn.
