In an email sent to the Kent State community, university administration confirmed the LGBTQ+ Center, E. Timothy Moore Student Multicultural Center, Women’s Center and the LGBTQ+ Living-Learning Community will no longer be operable.
The email also stated that Kent State’s Stark Campus’s LGBTQ+ Resource Center will no longer operate. These closures will be effective June 27.
These changes are due to the state legislation of Senate Bill 1 and federal executive orders of the Trump Administration, as the university continues to work towards being in alignment with these directives.
Although these centers will no longer be operated by the university, the email stated the spaces will remain open and available for students. Guidelines on what that means and their use are currently being developed.
Eboni Pringle, senior vice president for student life, wrote the email and expressed remorse for students and community members who could be affected by these changes.
“We understand these centers and the Living-Learning Community have been powerful sources of connection, support and growth, and we acknowledge the emotional and personal impact this change may have on many members of our community,” the email stated.
To overcome these changes and continue to meet student needs, the Division of Student Life said it will increase support for all student organizations through the Center for Student Involvement, as these organizations are permitted under SB1. This includes offering personalized guidance and engagement with student leaders and advisors.
To conclude the email, Pringle reaffirmed the Division of Student Life’s commitment to assist students and foster their success.
“While change is difficult, our mission remains the same: to foster a campus where every student feels a sense of belonging, has space to learn about themselves and others, and can build the community they desire to live, learn and grow in,” the email stated.
