When news broke of Eddy’s Bike Shop’s Peninsula location catching on fire unexpectedly, it was accompanied by a community outpouring of memories and gratitude.
This appreciation for the shop resulted in the opening of a temporary location at 1655 Mill Street West in Peninsula, only yards away from the original Peninsula location, on April 11.
For owner Jimmy Ruggles, he dreamed of setting up shop at the first storefront since he was a child.
Ruggles grew up around two bike shop owners, his grandfather and dad, who taught him valuable business lessons.
To him, Peninsula was the perfect option for one of his many Ohio locations, which he credits to its closeness to the nearby Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
“Peninsula is kind of the prime location to get to the toe path bike trail, and it’s right in the heart of the National Park, so it needs to have some type of bike rental business facility down right here,” Ruggles said.
Ruggles does not just credit the community for this second chance at a business in Peninsula, but also credited his employees.
He said employees, like Ron Bercaw, worked extended hours to help relocate the bike shop to its Stow location. Bercaw said he was willing to put in the extra work because of the respect Ruggles gives to employees.
“Jimmy’s really resilient. I mean the way he bounced back and put all of this together in such a short period of time, within 60 days we were here,” he said.
The future surrounding the temporary location remains uncertain, where Ruggles said he is at the mercy of the city.
Though there are no concrete plans, Ruggles hopes to renovate the new storefront in Peninsula and call it home.
