Kent State Police and Kent Fire Department responded to a reported fire inside Eastway Dining Hall around 9:36 p.m. on Tuesday.
The fire started after water and grease mixed on a grill inside one of the dining hall’s kitchens, according to Kent firefighter Bryan Pengal, and employees were directed to evacuate.
Pengal said power to the gas and stove inside of Eastway was turned off on scene.
He said Eastway would not be open for its usual 7 a.m. breakfast and could possibly remain closed for the coming days. However, the university confirmed the dining hall was operating normally Wednesday.
Shiva Miryala, a student who works as a cook in Eastway, said the fire was “not too big” despite the response from staff and first responders.
“The Health department will have to come here and approve everything,” Pengal said. “It’ll take a couple days.”
