Kent State launched a new website Tuesday that aims to inform students and faculty on how recent legislation, federal laws and court rulings will impact the university and centers on campus.
Just weeks after Gov. Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 1 into law and months into the second Trump administration, the university has laid out changes it must make by the end of June in order to keep its federal funding.
A university spokesperson said in a statement that the new website will serve as a guide for how Kent State will navigate new changes to higher education.
“With the rapidly evolving legal landscape impacting higher education, we’re committed to providing timely, accurate guidance for our students, faculty and staff,” the statement said. “The site will be updated frequently to ensure our community has the information needed to successfully navigate these changes.”
According to the website, the LGBTQ+ Center and the E. Timothy Moore Student Multicultural Center will have to undergo changes because of SB1. The university will also be unable to create new diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and must prohibit current DEI initiatives and offices.
SB1 will also force the university to review or possibly eliminate programs that graduate less than five students annually, according to the website. The bill will also require Kent State to implement an “American Civics” course by the fall 2026 semester.
Despite these changes, the website said student organizations will be protected and that classroom discussions will not be impacted by SB1.
As for the federal executive orders, recent Trump administration mandates prohibit “race-based decisions in all aspects of campus life,” bans transgender women from participating in women’s sports and increases immigration enforcement, among other actions.
More information on specific changes to Kent State and their effects can be found on the website, which will continue to be updated to clear up potentially ambiguous descriptions.
