Kent State men’s golf places fourth in Louisiana Classics

Kent State men’s golf fought back from a slow first round to finish fourth at the Louisiana Classics at the Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, Louisiana with a combined score of 881.

Despite the fourth place finish, Coach Herb Page knows that the Flashes have some thing to work on.

“We just started very poorly in the first round,” Page said. “No excuses. We played the last two rounds very good but fell too far behind. We need to work on our short game.”

The Classic was Kent State’s first tournament in four months, so Page said he knew the Flashes would be a little rusty. The weather conditions didn’t help either, which contributed to 14 of the 15 teams in the Classic scoring above par.

“It was really windy,” Page said. “It also rained. It played longer. It was also really cold (60 degrees).”

In amidst the struggles, Gisli Sveinbergsson fought back from the first two rounds for a final round score of 68, which tied for second lowest score in the final round.

Page praised Sveinbergsson’s final round play.

“He’s a really competitive guy,” Page said. “He needed that round for his confidence. He’s a tough kid. He’s very capable of doing that well. The first two rounds weren’t up to his standards.”

The Flashes’ next tournament is in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the General Hackler Championship on March 11 and 12.
