The 75-day extension that President Donald Trump gave TikTok on his inauguration day has finally expired, but on the expiration day Trump said he would give another 75-day extension. Does this mean TikTok is finally saved?
In the past few months during the 75-day extension, there have been barely any updates regarding a deal to save TikTok. However, Trump said that he found four potential bidders who are interested in buying the app.
Meanwhile, the second extension allows TikTok to stay on Apple and Google app stores without facing company fines. This also allows TikTok users to keep posting on the app and to update the app when needed, since many TikTok users said that there have been bugs in the app since TikTok went “dark.”
But the main question — who’s buying TikTok?
As said before, the 75-day extension does not prevent the app from being banned, but it does allow the company who owns the app, ByteDance, more time to find a U.S. company to buy the app.
Luckily, we now have potential bidders who want to purchase the app, the main one being Oracle. Another company who is rumored to be a potential bidder is Walmart, however, the company has denied these rumors of wanting to buy the app.
As said before, I believe that the Trump Administration and ByteDance are trying to keep this from the media until they are sure they have a deal. Considering we just got another extension after months of not having any updates, this could be a sign that we are close to a deal.
With everything else going on in the world today, scrolling through TikTok is what helps us cope with it. I guess we’ll see what is to come on June 19.
