Last month, Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski signed two agreements with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to enforce federal immigration law.
The agreements, posted on the ICE website, allow deputies to interrogate any person suspected of being in the country unlawfully, process immigration violations for those arrested on state or federal charges and make warrantless arrests under some circumstances, among other things.
The agreements comes with no additional revenue for the office, and it requires approval from ICE for any communication with the media about activities related to the partnership. Any information obtained or developed under the agreements, including documents, falls under control of ICE.
A representative for the sheriff’s office did not wish to comment at the time and said Zuchowski may do so at a later date.
