Each spring, Fake Patty’s Day floods Kent in a sea of green. This year, Fake Patty’s Day will be celebrated March 22, the Saturday after St. Patrick’s Day, because the holiday falls during spring break.
Students are already making plans for the Irish holiday. Libby Worthy, sophomore chapter president of Alpha Xi Delta, said she plans to make a festive breakfast for her sorority.
“Last year, my big made everybody green pancakes and eggs, and it was so fun,” Worthy said. “I live in the house now, so I’m like, maybe we should keep this a tradition where people come over in the morning, and we make green pancakes and eggs and take pictures.”
Another popular Fake Patty’s Day tradition is “Chickens fly at noon,” performed by Kappa Sigma, a fraternity on campus, she said.
“When they say, ‘Chickens fly at noon,’ they go out the second-story window, and they just chuck McChickens into the crowd,” she said.
Alongside Greek life, Kent’s downtown bars will be celebrating Fake Patty’s Day as well.
Fake Patty’s Day is Kent’s biggest holiday, said Brittany Garner, general manager of Barflyy.
“I just think everyone’s in such a good mood, no matter what the weather is,” she said.
Both emotional and alcoholic spirits will be high in Kent.
“We’ll be doing green mini beers, but it’ll be liquor in it that makes them green, not artificial green dye,” Garner said.
Although the day is meant to be fun, students should also prioritize safety when going out. Fifteen arrests were made last year on Fake Patty’s Day for disorderly conduct while intoxicated and underage drinking.
Worthy recommended safety tips to keep in mind while partying.
“Eat in the morning, drink water, stay safe,” she said. “That’s all, really. Just be aware of your surroundings.”
Nuhami Miller, a junior advertising major, had her own tips to ensure a good time.
“Go with people that you’re going to have fun with, even if it’s like one person,” Miller said. “It’s just, it’s always fun when it’s intimate between people.”
Freshmen students shouldn’t be intimidated by Fake Patty’s Day, she said.
“You would be surprised by how many people you meet at random places,” she said. “So, I feel like be open-minded and don’t let the people around you make you feel small.”
Miller, Garner and Worthy all said Fake Patty’s Day is a day of pure fun.
“Have the time of your life,” Garner said. “You only get so many years to do it.”
