An armed suspect was fatally shot by Ravenna police in an officer-involved shooting on March 16.
Inside an apartment on Hazen Street, an individual called the police about an armed man sleeping on the floor of an apartment, according to a release from Ravenna Police.
When police responded to the call, they discovered the suspect sleeping on the floor with a firearm in his waistband, prompting them to command the suspect to drop his weapon.
Not listening to the commands, the suspect exited the apartment using another individual as a human shield, according to the police report.
The officers continued to urge the suspect to drop his weapon, and the hostage was able to escape.
The suspect then pointed his firearm at the officers, prompting them to fatally shoot the suspect.
The officers administered life-saving measures, but they were unsuccessful as the suspect succumbed to his wounds. No officers were wounded during the shooting.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation will investigate the shooting further due to the involvement of Ravenna officers.
With the investigation still ongoing, the identity of the suspect is being withheld.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to contact the Ravenna Police Department at (330) 296-6486.
