At Kent State University, campus life is often filled with a steady cycle of lectures, late-night study sessions and the occasional coffee-fueled scramble to meet deadlines. However, for one evening, students had the chance to swap stress for sophistication at the Flash Activities Board’s Red Dress Gala.
This experience reminded everyone why dressing up and celebrating with friends is exactly what college life needs.
Hosted by FAB, the event was more than just another night on campus — it was a chance for students to step into a world of elegance. The worries of coursework and exams faded into the background, replaced by the soft glow of string lights, hum of conversation and pulse of music filling the dance floor.
FAB’s formal is a huge event that only happens once a year and the cold weather sleet did not stop students from enthusiastically embracing the occasion.
The opportunity to dress up was a draw in itself. On a campus where sweatpants and backpacks are the everyday uniform, the sight of students in sleek suits, shimmering gowns and perfectly styled hair created an atmosphere that felt both refreshing and rare.
While the formal is a once a year occurrence, some students have expressed they would want to have more dances throughout the academic year. Many students told me during the event that they love having the opportunity to dress up and get together with friends in a fun and safe environment.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the night reminded students of the importance of social events in college.
The chance to break from routine, meet new people and share an experience outside of academic pressures is an essential part of the college experience that can’t be measured in grades or resumes. FAB’s Formal gave students a space to celebrate themselves and each other. Whether that meant dancing, taking photos or simply enjoying a moment of lighthearted fun.
The event also highlighted the impact of the FAB, an organization dedicated to making student life more dynamic. FAB organizes events like this to bring together students from different backgrounds for shared experiences that create lasting memories.
It’s moments like laughing with friends, stepping onto a dance floor with confidence and feeling like part of something bigger that make a difference in the overall student experience.
As the night drew to a close, heels were swapped for sneakers, ties were loosened and students slowly made their way back to reality. But one thing was clear, everyone had an incredible time. From high-energy dance battles to candid photo booth moments, the night was filled with joy, laughter and unforgettable memories.
With more events in the works, students can look forward to even more opportunities to connect, celebrate and create experiences that make their time at Kent State truly special.
