Feb. 14 is a day that you definitely know. When you think about Valentine’s Day, the first thing that comes to mind is a romantic day with your partner. You might think of it as a day where you get flowers and chocolates for your significant other, with a hot date night afterward.
My thoughts? I hate that mindset. Yes, romantic relationships are a wonderful thing to celebrate, but to me, Valentine’s Day is so much more.
It’s a celebration of love, not just lovers. So I figured I would tell you about all the ways you can still celebrate Valentine’s Day with or without a valentine.
Let’s start with family. My mom has given me a Valentine’s gift every single year for as long as I can remember. It’s one of those traditions that always warms my heart. I usually return the favor with a bouquet of flowers or a classic box of chocolates, simple, but meaningful. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: family is everything.
Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show family some extra love. Maybe that means taking your parents out for dinner, sending your siblings a heartfelt message or just spending quality time together.
And what about your chosen family, your friends? I don’t know about you, but the love I have for my friends is absolutely astronomical.
My friends have been there for me through some of my toughest times and I can’t imagine life without them. If you’ve got friends like that, why not turn Valentine’s Day into a “Galentine’s” or “Palentine’s” celebration? Plan a cozy movie night, a brunch outing or even just a chill hangout where you tell your friends how much they mean to you.
Trust me, platonic love deserves just as much appreciation as the romantic kind.
At the end of the day, Valentine’s Day is what you make of it. So whether you’re celebrating with a partner, your family, your friends or just yourself, make it a day to appreciate all the people and connections that fill your heart with joy.
