Just one game after sophomore guard Cian Medley matched his career-high with 15 points against Miami (OH), he scored a new career-best 22 points and led the Kent State men’s basketball team to an 83-64 win over the Toledo Rockets on the road Tuesday night.
Medley cashed in four of the Flashes’ 12 3-pointers and also dished out seven of the team’s 17 assists.
KSU’s 12-19 (63.2%) from long range is its most efficient three-point shooting night of the season. In a nine-point loss against Miami, Kent State shot 13.8% on 4-29 from beyond the arc.
Senior guard Jalen Sullinger was 4-5 from deep, and senior guard Marquis Barnett was a perfect 3-3. Sullinger finished with 12 points, and Barnett had 13.
Senior forward VonCameron Davis added 19 points on 7-14 shooting, building on his team-leading 15.6 points per game average.
Kent State led the game wire-to-wire against the Rockets, leading by as many as 21 in the second half.
The Flashes outrebounded Toledo 30-20, led by sophomore guard Jamal Sumlin with eight, a career-high for him.
The team also didn’t miss any of its 11 free throws on the night.
The Flashes moved to 12-6 on the season and 3-3 versus the Mid-American Conference. This is good enough for fifth place in conference standings. KSU is knotted with Ball State and Eastern Michigan in the conference.
Toledo dropped to 10-8 in the year but remains tied for third place with Ohio, who share a 4-2 record versus the MAC.
Akron and Miami lead the MAC with 6-0 conference records, and they also post the two best overall records in the conference.
A chance to gain ground
The Flashes will take on the Ohio Bobcats Friday on the road with tipoff at 7 p.m.
OU is 10-8 overall and tied for third in the conference standings. With a win, Kent State can tie the Bobcats in the standings.
KSU will look for a little revenge, as Ohio has taken the last two matchups – the previous game was a 63-57 loss for Kent State in Athens.
