Finding the perfect gift for a college student can be tricky — balancing practicality, style and a touch of fun is not easy. Whether they’re begging for the new iPhone, decking out their dorm or just looking for ways to unwind, students shared some thoughtful, budget-friendly and memorable ideas to brighten their busy lives.
Maya Jackson, a freshman criminology and psychology major, shared what she is most excited to be gifted for Christmas. She also discussed how she easily shares her Christmas list with her family from a distance.
“This year I am really hoping to get a new guitar for Christmas,” Jackson said. “My family and I always share our Christmas lists through a shared note on our phones to make things easier.”
Harrison Miller, a freshman art history major, has a few things on the top of his list this year.
“I really want a small gold ring for my middle finger so I can start building a ring stack. That is something I have always wanted to do,” Miller said.
Some students are looking forward to more sentimental or lighthearted gifts to give and receive this year.
“On my list this year are mostly sentimental things because I have everything that I truly need,” Miller said. “Things like notes from family members about their favorite memory of me would be a great gift since I’m away from home.”
With college students typically needing money for gas or a grocery store run, Jackson said she prefers functional gifts over novelty items.
“I prefer receiving practical gifts, things I know that I will use,” she said. “I also love getting books because I love to read and it benefits my education.”
Miller enjoys practical gifts as well. There are several presents he received which helped him out as a student in the past.
“Some of the most useful gifts I have received are a new laptop for school and my parents paying for my college tuition,” he said.
From meaningful gifts to fun gifts, not all things have to be materialistic.
“I prefer receiving experiences as a gift,” Jackson said. “I enjoy quality time with the people I love more than anything they could ever dream of buying me.”
Gift giving can be hard, especially for college students. The best gifts show that someone’s unique interests and needs have been considered as they navigate this exciting time of their lives. Meanwhile, for many, the most important gift of all during the holidays is spending time with those they love most.
“Considering we are never all together anymore, with my brother living in California and me being away at school,” Jackson said, “More than anything, I’m just looking forward to being with my family.”
