Kent State women’s golf were second at the end of the first round of the BYU at Entrada Classic.

Through the second round, they took the lead and never looked back.

At the end, they were victorious.

The Flashes shot a three-under-par for the win at the end of 54 holes, four strokes ahead of second-place Texas Tech.

“It’s good to see us come out on top,” coach Greg Robertson said. “Texas Tech wouldn’t go away, but we finished the day strong. I’m very happy for us. A win is a win.”

That win didn’t come easy. With a persistent Texas Tech team, it further complicated things with a tough course.

“This golf course puts an emphasis on ball striking,” Robertson explained. “You had to put the ball in the correct spot in the fairway or the green to make it a lot easier for yourself. The greens also weren’t very fast and had bumps and tiers.”

The Flashes have had success at this course in the past.

“As a team, over last three years, we won twice and finished second once,” Robertson said. “We’ve been here before, so we know how to get it done.”

Robertson said it came down to the last few holes.

“We were never completely safe,” Robertson said. “The last few holes could get you into some trouble. There’s three of them that are built through a bunch of lava rocks if you miss the fairway or the green. Luckily, it all worked out for us to be able to win.”

The Flashes played well as a team, as five of the six Flashes that competed finished in the top-11. Thitapa Pakdeesettak finished in first, Michaela Finn tied for third, Pimnipa Panthong tied for seventh while Chole Salort and Karoline Stormo tied for eleventh. Kory Nielsen finished 32nd. 

Robertson said despite the victory, the Flashes still have work to do before the postseason.

“We are taking it one day at a time,” Robertson said. “We only have control over what we can control right now each day. We are going to get better as individuals and as a team to get better week by week, day by day.”

The Flashes have a bit of a break before their next tournament March 23-25 for the Evans Derby Experience in Auburn, Alabama.
